MAKING SENSE OF ORGANIC LABELS:
Below is a quick summary of how to understand various organic labels.
- Green & White USDA Seal stamped "100% Organic"
Product is comprised of 100% organic ingredients
- "Certified Organic"
Product comprised of 95% organic ingredients
- "Made with Organic Ingredients"
At least 70% of ingredients must be organic, while the remainng 30% cannot include any biotechnological crops that have been genetically modified
- How to determine produce that are genetically modified (GMO):
The sticker on the fruit or vegetable contains different PLU codes that can tell you whether the fruit was conventionally grown, organically grown, or genetically engineered.
Conventionally grown - has a 4 digit code (ie: #4011)
Organically grown - has 5 digits starting with "9" (ie: #94011)
Genetically modified - has 5 digits starting with "8" (ie: #84011)
